Corrections
How to tell us we got something wrong, and what we do about it.
Last updated
We will get things wrong. When that happens the useful response is to fix it quickly, in public, and leave a record.
Reporting an error
Email [email protected] with the headline or link, the specific passage you believe is wrong, and if you have it, the source that shows the correct information. We read everything sent to that address.
You do not need to be the subject of a story to ask for a correction, and you do not need to explain why you care.
What happens next
We check the claim against its original source. If we were wrong, we correct the article and attach a dated correction notice explaining what the error was and what it now says. The notice stays on the story permanently.
If we were not wrong, we will write back and tell you what we found and why we are leaving the story as it stands.
Either way we aim to respond within two business days.
What counts as a correction
A correction covers a factual error: a wrong number, name, date, title, quotation or sequence of events. We publish a correction notice for all of these.
Clarifications, where the facts were right but the wording invited a wrong reading, are handled the same way and marked as clarifications.
Ordinary updates to a developing story are noted with a timestamp rather than a correction notice, since nothing was wrong when it was published.
Removal
We do not remove accurate published stories. Where there is a compelling safety or legal reason to reconsider something, write to us and we will look at it properly.
