Angel Reese Breaks WNBA Single-Game and Season Rebounding Records
The Atlanta Dream forward pulled down 26 rebounds in a win over the Los Angeles Sparks, breaking a 23-year-old single-game mark and the season record in the same night.
Angel Reese grabbed 26 rebounds for the Atlanta Dream on Monday night, breaking two WNBA records in the same game during a 78-71 win over the Los Angeles Sparks, according to ESPN.
Reese's total broke the league's single-game rebounding record of 24, set by Chamique Holdsclaw for the Washington Mystics in May 2003, ESPN reported. Her 20th rebound of the night also pushed her past A'ja Wilson's mark for most rebounds in a single WNBA season, according to Yahoo Sports. Reese finished the season with 458 rebounds through 37 games, seven more than Wilson's total from 2024, ESPN reported.
"Last time I was here, I didn't miss any shots. Tonight, I couldn't hit s---, so I knew I was going be able to get them on the rebounding side," Reese said on Peacock's postgame show, according to ESPN. "I just want to be consistent for my team. Offensively, defensively, whatever it takes to win."
A Big Week On The Road
The record night followed a career-high 31 points for Reese in a win at Phoenix on Saturday, ESPN reported. With Monday's victory, Atlanta completed a 4-0 trip on the West Coast and improved to 25-13, according to CBS Sports, which put the team in fourth place in the playoff standings. Over the four-game trip, Reese averaged 20.8 points, 15 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.5 steals while shooting 57.9 percent from the field, CBS Sports reported.
Dream coach Karl Smesko credited Reese's improvement over time. "Angel's been remarkable on this trip," he said, according to ESPN. "You can see her getting better each month."
Reese also picked up her 27th double-double of the season on a basket with 13.9 seconds left, giving her 11 points for the game, ESPN reported. That leaves her one shy of the single-season double-double record set by Alyssa Thomas in 2023, according to ESPN.
Crediting The Veterans
Reese, 24, pointed to advice from Tina Charles, the league's all-time leading rebounder, who retired recently with 4,262 rebounds over 14 seasons, according to ESPN. "All the vets pour into me," Reese said, according to ESPN. "I remember last year when I was playing against her and how she was giving me little keys to playing around the basket and doing things to make yourself consistent and try to be one of the best players. And I just want to do that every single night."
Reese is averaging 12.4 rebounds per game this season and has led the league in rebounding in each of her three WNBA seasons, according to the Guardian.
