Odegaard Says Arsenal 'Want to Win Everything' After Community Shield Rout of Man City
Arsenal's captain scored the third goal in a 3-0 win over Manchester City that gave new City manager Enzo Maresca a rough start in Cardiff.
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard said his team is out to sweep every trophy on offer after Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield on Sunday at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, according to Yahoo Sports.
"We showed our level today," Odegaard said, according to Channel NewsAsia. "I think we showed that we're serious, we want to do it again. There's more trophies to go for and that's the aim." He added that Arsenal wants to win the Premier League again along with "a few other trophies."
Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the match, finishing off a pass from midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly, according to the Guardian. Kai Havertz doubled the lead before halftime, heading in a cross that new signing Christos Tzolis had flicked back across goal, Al Jazeera reported. Odegaard added the third three minutes into the second half, dribbling past Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol before beating goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, according to Channel NewsAsia. Odegaard was named man of the match, according to Yahoo Sports.
Arsenal fielded two of its summer signings, Tzolis, who arrived from Club Brugge for $46 million (34 million pounds) and provided two assists, and Bruno Guimaraes, who joined from Newcastle United for $101 million (75 million pounds), according to Al Jazeera.
A rough debut for Maresca
The loss was the first competitive match in charge for new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, who replaced Pep Guardiola this offseason, according to CBS Sports. It tied the joint-heaviest defeat by a City manager in his first game, matching a 4-1 loss under Harry Newbould against Arsenal in 1906, and also matched Maresca's own worst loss as a manager in England, a 3-0 defeat while he was in charge of Chelsea in 2025, according to Yahoo Sports.
"The goal we conceded after 24 seconds unfortunately affected the game," Maresca said, according to Yahoo Sports. "We have many things to work on. The season's just started so there are many things we need to do better."
Manchester City has won just two of nine matches against Arsenal since the start of the 2023-24 season, according to Yahoo Sports.
