Scottie Scheffler Wins FedEx St. Jude Championship by Eight Strokes

Scottie Scheffler shot a final-round 4-under-par 66 on Sunday to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship by eight strokes, according to the Japan Times. The victory in Memphis, Tennessee, opened the PGA Tour's 2026 playoffs and stretched his lead in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the next event.

"I felt like a week like this was coming," Scheffler said, according to the Japan Times. "I felt like I was on repeat all year just being like, 'Hey, I'm playing solid. I'm close.' It feels good to be answering some different questions at the end of this week."

A Season Of Near Misses Ends In A Blowout

Scheffler entered the postseason as the top-ranked player despite winning just once during the regular season, according to CBS Sports. He backed that title with five runner-up finishes, five other top-10 results and only one missed cut across 17 tournaments, CBS Sports reported. It marked the fourth time in five years he topped the season-long points race before the playoffs even began, according to CBS Sports.

Scheffler is chasing a second FedEx Cup title, which would put him alongside Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as multiple-time winners of the award, CBS Sports reported. McIlroy, who won the Masters this year, is pursuing his fourth PGA Tour postseason crown. Matt Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark and Chris Gotterup each won three regular-season titles and are looking to add a playoff trophy to their résumés, according to CBS Sports.

Not everyone made it to Memphis with a real shot at advancing. Jordan Spieth played in only one playoff event for the second straight year after finishing outside the top 50, joining Shane Lowry, Keith Mitchell and Max Homa in missing the cutoff, CBS Sports reported.

Playoffs Move To A New Format

This is the 20th edition of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and the format has changed again, according to CBS Sports. The field shrinks from 70 players in Memphis to 50 at the BMW Championship in St. Louis and finally to 30 for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, CBS Sports reported. The Tour Championship will now be a straightforward 72-hole stroke-play event with no staggered scoring start, meaning every player begins at even par, according to CBS Sports.

Winners of the St. Jude Championship and the BMW Championship each receive 750 FedEx Cup points, matching the total awarded at the Players Championship and the four majors, CBS Sports reported. The Tour Championship will carry a $40 million purse, with the rest of the season's $100 million bonus pool distributed after the BMW Championship concludes, according to CBS Sports.
