Liverpool's Szoboszlai Says Reds 'Should Have Won' After Late Draw At Newcastle
Dominik Szoboszlai's 99th-minute penalty rescued a 2-2 draw for Liverpool in Andoni Iraola's first Premier League game as manager.
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai said his team "should have won" at Newcastle United on Sunday, even though it took a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time just to salvage a 2-2 draw, according to Yahoo Sports.
The result opened the Premier League season and marked the first game in charge for both Andoni Iraola at Liverpool and Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle. Neither had an easy afternoon. Newcastle went ahead inside five minutes when Anthony Elanga raced onto a pass and beat goalkeeper Alisson, according to the Guardian. Liverpool leveled when Cody Gakpo's shot from outside the box found the corner of the net, only for Newcastle to retake the lead through Joe Willock, who curled in a finish set up by Yoane Wissa, Yahoo Sports reported.
A Late Twist
Liverpool looked headed for defeat until the final seconds. Substitute Victor Munoz was fouled in the penalty area by Newcastle's Lewis Hall, and Szoboszlai stepped up to fire the penalty into the top corner with the last kick of the match, according to the BBC.
"If I am honest, we should have won. But that's football," Szoboszlai said after the match, per Yahoo Sports. "You don't win easy in the Premier League, doesn't matter who you play against. We will never give up. I can guarantee you that."
Iraola agreed his team deserved more. "It's probably not the result you want when you come in before the game, but we definitely deserve this point and even more," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. He added that Liverpool never stopped fighting and that the draw "tastes better" because of the late equalizer.
Newcastle's Rebuild
Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa called the late concession "rough" but said the performance was still a positive sign for a team rebuilding after losing midfielders Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali to Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur over the offseason, according to Channel NewsAsia. "We needed this win to make a statement, but in the end we draw," Wissa said. "We have so much to work on."
The match also marked the return of striker Alexander Isak to Newcastle, where he starred before his transfer to Liverpool last year. Isak was booed by the home crowd throughout and managed just one clear chance, which he missed, according to the Guardian.
The draw put Liverpool ninth in the table after the first round of Premier League games, according to Yahoo Sports. The team is scheduled to play Nottingham Forest next.
