Von Miller is heading back to Texas. The Dallas Cowboys announced Sunday night that the pass rusher, a future Hall of Famer, agreed to a one-year contract with the team, ESPN reported.

The deal is worth $5.5 million and can max out at $7.5 million, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Miller, 37, grew up in the Dallas suburb of DeSoto and played college football at Texas A&M, according to ESPN and CBS Sports. He posted "Hereee Weee Gooo" on social media Sunday along with an image of himself in a Cowboys uniform.

Miller is entering his 15th NFL season and leads all active players with 138.5 career sacks, ESPN reported. He recorded nine sacks last season with the Washington Commanders, his best total since 2021, when he had 9.5 while splitting time between the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Rams. CBS Sports noted that injuries to Washington's edge rushers pushed Miller into a bigger role than expected last year, and he played all 17 games with three starts.

Filling A Need Left By Parsons

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones had hinted at adding a significant piece to the defense at the start of training camp, ESPN reported. Last week, Dallas signed defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to a three-year, $105.9 million extension. Miller's signing follows that move.

The Cowboys had the NFL's worst defense in scoring prevention last season and ranked 31st the year before that, according to CBS Sports, which also reported that only six teams posted a lower sack rate than Dallas in 2025 and that no team allowed more passing yards. The defensive slide came after Jones traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers last summer, CBS Sports reported.

Miller joins a young pass-rush group that includes Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku and first-round pick Malachi Lawrence, with Sam Williams, James Houston and Marist Liufau also potentially in the mix, according to ESPN. Yahoo Sports reported that the Cowboys are moving to a new 3-4 base defense this season, with Gary and Ezeiruaku expected to start and Lawrence in contention for snaps, while Miller is likely to work as a rotational pass-rush specialist rather than an every-down player.

A Reunion With His Old Coordinator

Miller was a first-round pick of the Broncos in 2011 and has made eight Pro Bowls and seven first or second-team All-Pro squads, according to ESPN. He was the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year that season and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting twice, in 2012 and 2016. He won Super Bowl 50 MVP honors with Denver before being traded to the Rams, where he won a second Super Bowl ring, ESPN reported.

New Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker overlapped with Miller in Denver for part of one season before Miller was traded, ESPN reported. Miller has also played for the Buffalo Bills, where a torn ACL cost him time late in the 2022 season and early in 2023, before signing with the Commanders last year.
