Anthropic Signs $45 Billion Cloud Deal With Nscale For West Virginia Data Center
The six-year agreement gives the AI startup access to 460 megawatts of computing power built around Nvidia's newest chips, as Anthropic races to keep pace with demand ahead of a planned IPO.
Anthropic has agreed to pay roughly $45 billion over six years to rent artificial intelligence computing power from Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company, according to people familiar with the matter cited by CNBC and Reuters. Bloomberg News was first to report the deal on Wednesday.
Under the agreement, Anthropic will lease about 460 megawatts of capacity at an Nscale data center campus in West Virginia, CNBC reported, citing two people who were not authorized to speak publicly about the terms. The facility will run on Nvidia's newest Vera Rubin chips and is expected to come online at the end of 2027, according to CNBC's sources. Anthropic declined to comment on the deal, Reuters reported.
A Fast-Growing Appetite For Computing Power
The Nscale agreement is the latest in a string of infrastructure deals Anthropic has signed this year as it tries to keep up with demand for its Claude AI models and coding tools. In July, chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices said it would sell Anthropic tens of billions of dollars' worth of AI servers while investing up to $5 billion in the company, according to Reuters. Anthropic has also agreed to pay Elon Musk's SpaceX $1.25 billion a month through May 2029 for access to two AI training data center clusters, Colossus and Colossus II, according to SpaceX's own IPO filing cited by Reuters. The company has separately struck deals with Google and Broadcom.
Anthropic said earlier this year that surging demand for Claude had caused what it called "inevitable strain" on its infrastructure, hurting reliability and performance for users during peak hours.
An IPO Looms
The spending spree comes as Anthropic prepares for a potential stock market debut. The company confidentially filed IPO paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June and has held early talks with prospective investors, according to CNBC. Anthropic is currently valued at $965 billion and faces intensifying competition from rivals including OpenAI and Google, CNBC reported.
Reuters reported earlier this month that Anthropic is projecting 2028 revenue of roughly $190 billion to $200 billion, far above its current $47 billion annual revenue run rate. How the company builds and pays for its computing capacity is expected to be a central part of the pitch it makes to Wall Street investors.
