Spotify Will Tag AI-Generated Artist Profiles With New Badge
Starting in mid-September, Spotify will flag profiles built around artificial intelligence personas and keep them out of recommendations by default unless a listener chooses to follow them.
Spotify said Tuesday that it will begin marking artist profiles built around artificial intelligence personas rather than real musicians, adding a visible "AI Persona" badge to those pages starting in mid-September.
A visible label, not a ban
The badge will appear directly on the artist's profile, giving listeners a clear signal that the music comes from an AI-generated persona instead of a human performer, according to the company. Spotify said the change is meant to give listeners more control and clarity about who, or what, is behind the songs they stream.
The company is not removing AI-generated music from its catalog or barring AI personas from having profiles. Instead, Spotify said these profiles will be excluded from its recommendation systems by default, meaning they won't automatically surface in algorithmic playlists or suggested listening. A listener who wants to hear an AI persona's music can still choose to follow that profile directly, which will let its tracks appear in that listener's personalized recommendations going forward.
Part of a broader push for transparency
Spotify framed the labeling system as one piece of a larger effort to help listeners understand how their music is made as AI tools become more common in the industry. The company did not say how many AI-generated artist profiles currently exist on its platform or how it plans to verify which profiles qualify for the badge.
The change comes as streaming services face growing pressure from musicians and labels over AI-generated tracks that mimic human artists or flood platforms with synthetic music. Spotify's move gives the company a way to distinguish that content without pulling it from the platform entirely.
Spotify did not say whether the labeling requirement will extend to songs that use AI tools in production but are credited to human artists, as opposed to profiles built entirely around a synthetic persona. The company also did not detail what happens if an AI persona's profile is mislabeled or if a human artist is incorrectly flagged as AI-generated.
The badges are set to begin appearing in mid-September, according to Spotify.
