Stability AI, a company that builds artificial intelligence tools for music, gaming and entertainment, said it has closed a $76 million Series B funding round, bringing its total funding to $232 million, according to the company's announcement. The total includes two earlier equity rounds and convertible notes raised since Prem Akkaraju became chief executive in June 2024, the company said.

New Backers From Hollywood and the Music Business

The round drew a new group of investors from entertainment and technology, Stability AI said, including the video game publisher Electronic Arts and three of the largest names in recorded music: Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures also joined as new investors, according to the announcement. Existing investors Coatue, Greycroft, Kadmos Capital, and individual backers Sean Parker and Eric Schmidt returned to invest again, the company said.

Stability AI's earlier investor list includes Lightspeed Venture Partners, Mantis Capital, Sound Ventures and the marketing firm WPP, along with individuals such as filmmaker James Cameron, former Disney executive Kevin Mayer, producer Mark Burnett, agent Patrick Whitesell and Akkaraju himself, according to the company.

"This unmatched group of investors is an affirmation of our vision where generative AI empowers every producer, musician, and storyteller," Akkaraju said in the announcement. He said the company aims to pair its technology with "expertise, credibility, and direct connection to artists" from its backers.

A New Board Seat and a Music Model Launch

Stability AI also said Thomas Laffont, a co-founder of the investment firm Coatue, has joined its board of directors. The board already included Cameron, Parker, Greycroft co-founder Dana Settle and Akkaraju, according to the company.

"While others are building generalized AI, Stability AI is building creative tools and doing it alongside the artists, studios, and rights holders whose work defines the field," Laffont said in a statement released by the company.

The funding announcement follows the release of Stable Audio 3.0, a set of open-weight music generation models that Stability AI said were trained on licensed data. The company said artists can use the new models through a plugin for digital audio workstations or directly on its website, StableAudio.com. Stability AI did not disclose the size of the licensing deals behind the training data or how many artists have used the new tools.
